This work presents an image of contemporary urban China, the elevation of a high rise building in Shanghai seen from a high viewpoint.

The result is disorientating and vertiginous as the lines of perspective converge downwards. Zhang Enli has developed a figurative style that captures a very particular apprehension of the visual world. His subjects are usually familiar, everyday objects and situations but there is a compelling oddness that arises from his intense and distinctive way of seeing. Birmingham and Walsall art galleries are working together to build up a collection exploring the metropolis and urban environment under the Art Fund International scheme. This work complements ORBIT also acquired through AFI which examines a different aspect of the contemporary Chinese urban scene. Presented by the Art Fund through Art Fund International.
