Walker is a complex and prolific American artist who has gained national and international recognition for her room-size tableaux depicting historical narratives haunted by sexuality, violence, and subjugation but made using the genteel 18th-century art of cut-paper silhouettes.

This work represents a shift away from reflections on pre-Civil War American history to a response to events taking place in our time, namely Hurricane Katrina in which 1,836 people lost their lives.
