'Rhythm' portrays scenes of violence: the shooting of civilians by police. The event represents an unspecified but recognised atrocity. The presence of injustice and violence conveyed here and the necessary resolution that must follow fits with an important developing theme of Peace and Reconciliation in The Herbert visual art collections. By contrast 'Scholar' portrays a 'Ghandi-like' figure as teacher placed within an orchard. The Herbert already has an existing collection of modern and contemporary prints, such as work by Paolozzi and has started to collect work of makers of Asian origin. This work was acquired with the support of the Art Fund with the assistance of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
