This cup is thought to be the earliest example of a York-made piece of domestic hollow-ware so far recorded.

The museum has a collection of York silver spanning three centuries and this cup is now the earliest piece of silver in the collection. Bryce was born in York and primarily known for his work in the religious sector for churches; his secular work is exceptionally rare. The cup was possibly a wedding gift and it is particularly attractive due to its simple yet striking design and its immaculate, well patinated condition.

Private collection; Nicholas Shaw.
