Portrait bust of the daughter of Sir Alexander Matheson (1st Baronet of Lochalsh), who made money abroad and returned to the Highlands where he bought several rural estates and land in Inverness.

Munro was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and is one of the few Inverness artists with an international reputation. While in London, he worked on the Houses of Parliament and became a friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Matheson also commissioned Munro to create a bust of Mary's brother, Kenneth James Matheson as a child. Both sculptures were purchased with Art Fund grants.

Provenance

By descent through the Matheson family to EMF Matheson. This bust was on loan to the museum from 1994 to 2008.
