This vase is the first work by Rie to enter Mima's collection and belongs to the start of a highly productive and successful period in her career.

It is particularly interesting as it shows the impact of Hans Coper's work on her practice, particularly with regard to the neck of the vase. In this work the neck sits on top of the body terminating in a conical rim that brings to mind one of RieÂ’s own bowl forms, rather than the customary extended saucer shape. In this way Rie is setting up more of a dialogue between the elements of vessel, rather than seeking to create a single gesture of throwing.
