A four piece tea service comprises a teapot of oval form, a swing handled sugar basin, a helmet-shaped cream jug, and a navette-shaped teapot stand.

The separate pieces are all engraved with a border of thistle heads and foliage. Trained in Edinburgh, Douglas was a talented silversmith, who ended up as assay master for the Edinburgh Guild from 1808 to 1810. Dundee pieces by James Douglas are rare as he only spent about five years in Dundee from 1795 till around 1800.
