A circular miniature of Jane Small that was originally catalogued as Mrs Robert Pemberton.

She wears a black dress and a white chemisette, clasped with a golden collar. On her corsage is a red carnation, and she holds a leaf. The background is ultramarine blue. Mr Pemberton's coat of arms is on the back. Jane SmallÂ’s maiden name was Pemberton and she was the wife of Nicholas Small, a rich London merchant. The attribution is thought more likely than that of Mrs R Pemberton, the wife of an obscure Northamptonshire country gentleman.

Provenance

Mr J Heywood Hawkins, 1865; Mr Pierpont Morgan, New York; Lord Duveen, 1935
