The Dundee firm of Whytock & Sons had a large shop in the town centre in the mid 19th century and was an important part of city life.

This clan badge takes the conventional garter form with the motto 'SUBLIMIA CURES' [possible translation: Take a care for the Sublime] with the crest of a cupid shooting an arrow. Both the crest and the motto are associated with the Bowman family. The cupid is in the form of a Negro boy dressed in skins which may indicate that the family was connected with the slave industry.

Dr William Guthrie; by descent.
