View of Rye from Cadborough
- Art Funded
- 19.5 x 23 cm
- Stern Pissarro Gallery
Pissarro visited Rye in 1913 with his fellow artist JB Manson, and they each made a series of paintings in and around the town. The Museum has an oil of Rye by Manson from that visit. As in the oil, Luciens interest includes how he effects the landscape between the viewer and Rye, filling in his pencil drawing with washes and rapid dabs of colour over an assured composition which exhibits his range of graphic skills. It also shows his use of colour in a quite different way to his oil work, which has strong brushwork and light-reflecting paint.
Mrs. J. Barry Ryan, 1950; private collection. This work has been vetted by the Art Loss Register in 2007.
