The Abridge Treasure has appeared in a series of batches beginning in 2002, and these two coins are the latest component.

The Art Fund helped Epping Forest purchase nine other nobles in 2003 and 2005. Gold nobles of the reign of Edward III were the first gold coins produced in any significant quantity and generally circulated, reflecting a growing economy. The intricate design of the noble would be standard for over a century but the significance of the king in a ship is still debated.

Provenance

Discovered near Abridge, Essex by a metal detectorist and declared Treasure in 2006.
