Reduce the environmental impact of your museum's learning, outreach and public programmes with this handy toolkit.

Looking for guidance on how to embed environmental sustainability in your public programmes?

From finding language that resonates with local audiences, to thinking about the life cycle of materials and connecting with local partners - this toolkit will equip your museum or gallery with useful skills, knowledge and resources so that you are able to initiate and facilitate climate conversations, making this global issue locally tangible.

At Art Fund, we recognise the cultural sector's responsibility and want to urgently respond to the climate crisis. In museums and galleries, this includes the stories that are told, as well as the planning and delivery of activities and programmes.

In May and June, we supported 44 museums, galleries and cultural organisations across the UK to programme events inspired by THE HERDS. This ever-growing herd of life-size puppet animals stampeded into cities across Africa and Europe to flee climate disaster. Activities were designed to respond to the climate crisis and connect local communities with museum collections and the natural world.

In partnership with the Design Museum, we have produced this resource to support museum professionals to ask the right questions at the right time, adopt a greener approach to developing programmes, and impactfully communicate with participants and local audiences on the climate crisis.

This downloadable toolkit provides practical tips and guidance on including your colleagues, collaborators and audiences in these conversations and selecting materials with a lower environmental impact.
