How we work
Bold, flexible, independent
As an independent charity, we receive no funding from government. We are supported by our members who buy the National Art Pass, as well as donations, legacies and gifts from individuals, grants from trusts and foundations, and companies.
Being independent gives us the ability to be flexible, act quickly and make bold decisions in support of the museum sector.
Art Fund is governed by a Royal Charter, and was established as an organisation by Royal Charter in 1906.

Our board of trustees oversees the direction of Art Fund and considers all gifts and bequests of art and major grant applications. The day-to-day running of the charity is in the hands of our senior management team, supported by our hard-working staff.
Museums and galleries are vital spaces for everyone. That’s why we support them to do more for audiences everywhere. You can read all about it in our latest annual report.
