
This everyday scene is painted against a wooded backdrop, with the figures of the washerwomen displayed across the middle and foreground of the picture. In 1955, Mr Lycett Green presented his collection of 137 pictures to the City of York Art Gallery through the Art Fund. In 1957 he made a further gift of 6 paintings to the Gallery and then again in1958 of 2 paintings including this one.
