William Darling McKay, 1844

Photo © East Lothian Council Museum Service

William Darling McKay grew up in Gifford, East Lothian, and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy School in Edinburgh. He later travelled in Holland and adopted the en plein air approach to painting he discovered there.

His work became dominated by pastoral landscapes with men and women working the land.

This painting shows a scene at Yester Woods, near Gifford. It joins 18 other works by McKay in the collection of East Lothian Council Museums Service.
