Walking a Circle on Hoy (Along a Four Day Walk, Orkney)
Richard Long, 1992

Richard Long has used walking as a medium in his work since he created A Line Made by Walking in 1967 while he was still a student.
Long records and meditates on his walks in the form of maps, photographs, mud paintings, texts and sculptures. Walking a Circle on Hoy is a record of a walk that he took on the Orkney island of Hoy in 1992. Hoy is the only wilderness area in Orkney, and this record of a four-day walk there reflects the monumental scale of the landscape.
Walking a Circle on Hoy joins the strong collection of modern and contemporary art at the Pier Arts Centre, which hosted Long during the residency in which he made the work.
