Virgil reading the Aeneid to Augustus and the fainting Octavia

Samuel Woodforde, 1790

This work is a study for a large history subject, presumably never executed. It comes from a portfolio of drawings and sketches which reveal the passion and brilliance of the young artist Woodeforde in the first flush of his discovery of Rome and the ancient world. Woodeford later met little success with his history paintings.
