View of Newcastle upon Tyne taken from a windmill to the eastward of St Ann's

William Daniell, c. 1802–1803

This very large landscape shows the old Tyne Bridge spanning the middle distance. The Norman castle that gave Newcastle its name is visible in the distance. The two main industries of Newcastle, coalmining and shipbuilding, are well represented with a horse-drawn coal wagon in the foreground and two ships being fitted in a boat builders' yard on Newcastle bank. The detail of the picture was painted from studies sketched on the spot.
