View of Martello Towers near Bexhill, looking towards Beachy Head
John F Tennant, 1835

The picture is of considerable local interest, showing the Martello Towers in the Pevensey Level area about twenty-five years after they were built as a defence against a possible Napoleonic invasion. They are situated between Hastings and Bexhill. Many of the Towers have since crumbled into the sea or been obscured by housing and industrial development.
