Venus in a Car Drawn by Doves and attended by Three Cupids

Jean Penicaud II, c. 1540–1549

The design of this plaque is based on an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi. Penicaud was known for his development and mastery of the grisaille technique of enamelling. This is an example of a purchase made on the Grand Tour by Sir Andrew Fountaine who built Narford Hall, near Swaffham. Fountaine was a noted connoisseur and Grand Tourist and his collection was one of the most important ever amassed in Norfolk.
