Two Minstrels, One With Cymbals And The Other With Pipe

William Morris, Morris & Co, 1834

This stained-glass panel showing two minstrels playing musical instruments – cymbals and a pipe – was designed by William Morris and made by the Morris & Co workshop in the 1880s. Morris is celebrated as one of the founders of the British Arts & Crafts movement and for his role in the propagation of socialism. He studied classics at the University of Oxford and later trained as an architect. In 1861 he founded the decorative-arts firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, which was later renamed Morris & Co in 1875.
