Two Bozzetti of Apostles St Philip & St Matthew
Guiseppe Mazzuoli, 1679
The statuettes relate to the series of 12 Apostles originally made for Siena Cathedral to be placed against main columns of the nave to replace a set of Trecento sculpts then considered crude and rough. Commission given by Cardinal Flavio Chigi - Mazzuoli, his protege. Statues in place by 1695, by 1879 they were felt to be out of place so removed and presented to the Brompton Oratory in 1895.
