The influential teacher and artist Maurice de Sausmarez painted this picture during a summer holiday in Italy in 1955. It shows a semi-abstract view of the Tuscan landscape in a range of muted tones.
De Sausmarez studied at Willesden School of Art and at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1950 he was appointed head of the new department of fine art at the University of Leeds. This subtly abstract picture now joins the gallery there, alongside an existing group of the artist’s work in his earlier, more representational style.
