The installation Transient: The Ship of Dreams and Nightmares is a collaborative work by artist Stephen Dixon and members of the Burslem Jubilee Project, a Stoke-based organisation that provides social and educational activities for refugees and asylum seekers in the area.

Suspended ceramic objects, each reflecting a single refugee’s story, form a Mediterranean migrant boat. Among the objects are a washing machine representing the importance of cleanliness and human dignity on the journey, a loudhailer to convey political or police oppression, a birdcage to symbolise confinement, and a dove representing peace, freedom and hope.

Dixon, who studied at the University of Newcastle and Royal College of Art in London, is known for his politically engaged work in ceramics.

Transient joins the collections of National Museums Liverpool, where it will be displayed in the new migration gallery of the Maritime Museum, which is undergoing redevelopment.
