Robert Welch believed that good design should be universal, a belief that inspired him to accept this commission to make a commemorative piece. Most limited-run commemorative pieces were mechanically mass-produced with no artisanal touch – this hand-crafted goblet was Welch’s attempt to produce a worthwhile commemorative item. Welch drew upon medieval designs for his inspiration, adopting lobed base of a medieval chalice and Gothic lettering inspired by the V&A’s 15th-century Studley Bowl. Welch grew up in Malvern, less than 25 miles from Chipping Campden, and the goblet joins a permanent display of Welch’s work at Court Barn Museum.
