Three legends of St Nicholas

Gerard David, 1500–1510

© National Galleries of Scotland

These three panels show scenes from the legend of St Nicholas of Myra, the patron saint of children. 1. St Nicholas on the day of his birth, standing up and thanking God for having given him life; 2. The Saint, as a young man, putting a purse of gold through a window to provide dowries for the three daughters of an impoverished nobleman; 3. The Saint, after he had become Bishop of Myra, raising from a pickling-tub three boys whom an innkeeper had killed and salted down as meat for his customers.
