John Ruskin was a reknowned art critic, writer and visual artist whose output over his lifetime was prolific.
The Whitehouse Ruskin Collections are an extraordinary store of his work. It was formed by the educationalist and Liberal MP John Howard Whitehouse, and contains letters, diaries, manuscripts, books, works of art and very early photographs. There are more than 8,000 manuscripts in the collection, including 29 volumes of Ruskin’s diaries, from 1835 to 1888. There are 7,400 letters; 350 books from Ruskin’s own library; 1,500 drawings; 500 prints; 125 daguerreotypes and some of the most exquisitely drawn sketches and painted watercolours of architecture, buildings around Europe and Britain, and intimately observed landscapes.
