The Trial (after Kafka)

Keith Vaughan, 1950

© The estate of Keith Vaughan. All rights reserved, DACS 2009

The 'Trial' is figurative in the most literal sense of the word, in that it is dominated by boldly simplified monolithic figures composed without the distraction of minutely observed detail. Although on occasion his work came close to total abstraction, notably in the landscape paintings, the suggestion of a recognisable, if nightmarish, location is always present.
