The Revenue Cutter

Thomas Gainsborough, 1727–1888

A coastal scene with figures and boats possibly connected with a visit to the Devonshire coast that Gainsborough was intending to make in the summer of 1779. The view is taken from the shore, with the cutter in full sail in the centre and other vessels nearby. The marine subject of the drawing is uncommon.
