The Purification of the Virgin
Unknown artist, 17th century

This relief representing the Purification was probably made in 17th century Florence. The High Priest stands at the top of a flight of steps holding the Child in his hands. A few steps lower the Virgin kneels before him. An elderly man bends down to take some doves from a cage on the left, while behind him a youth lights a torch from the Paschal candle. The background is filled with figures and angels.
