The Old Man of Coniston from The Bell - A Winter Study
W G Collingwood, 1925

Collingwood was one of Ruskin's prize students and this work shows his mentor's influence. The artist examines the bare bones of the mountain, brought into almost monochrome relief by the dusting of snow which exaggerates the highlights and suggests the contours to reveal the basic structure.
