The Mysterious Garden

Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh, 1911

Margaret MacDonald Mackintosh was, alongside her husband Charles Rennie Mackintosh, one of the key figures in the emergence of the Glasgow Style in the 1890s. She is an exceptional example of an early twentieth-century female Scottish artist who won international recognition, yet her fame was eclipsed by her husband. Her work is very rare and this is the first to be acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland. This is one of her largest and most famous watercolours: it features on the cover of the standard monograph on her.
