The mill is a favourite subject with Bright and combined with his mastery of cloud effects, this picture is a dramatic study of light and shade. Bright's painting of cattle, as shown in the foreground; is much better than that of other members of the Norwich School. Henry Bright was a member of the Norwich School of painting. He took lessons from John Berney Crome and John Sell Cotman, the strong influence of the latter artist being reflected in Bright's work. One of six gifts to six museums by Howard Bliss through the Art Fund between 1946 and 1957.
