The Jones Conversation Piece

William Hogarth, 1731

Group portrait of the family of Robert Jones II (1706-42), son of Robert Jones, MP for Glamorgan. Robert Jones II stands to the right. His mother is shown in dark blue, seated to the right with her spaniel. His younger brother Oliver is seated to the left and adjacent are their sisters Mary and Elizabeth. The background figures of a boy struggling with a monkey and haymakers disporting themselves strike an ironic contrast with the decorum of the family group.
