The Island of Monserrat From the Road before the Town
Thomas Hearne, 1775–1776

The island of Montserrat is one of the Leeward Islands, a group of sugar island. This view is taken from a ship anchored off the main town of Plymouth. The fort there is clearly visible, as is another on the right at Old Fort Point. Although at least seven windmills for processing sugar cane are visible on estates around the island, the mountainous terrain of Montserrat meant it was the least productive of the sugar islands. The island is dominated by the volcanic mass of the Souffriere Hills, of which the highest point is Chance's Peak, seen on the right of the panorama
