The Immaculate Conception

Giacomo Antonio Ponsonelli, c. 1700

A standing figure of the Virgin Mary with her hands clasped across her breast. She stands on a cloud with two heads of cherubim encompassed by the horns of a crescent moon. This work displays Ponsonelli's virtuoso technique - the varied surface treatment provides flickering reflections to enhance the surging and billowing of the Virgin's draperies.
