Andy Sewell is a London based contemporary photographer. This selection of 40 photographs represent limited edition prints of the photographs which constituted Sewell self-published book, ‘The Heath’. Made over the course of a five year project documenting Hampstead Heath, the photographs are subtle, atmospheric and immersive in style. Sewell is interested in the paradox between the Heath’s apparent wildness and its placement in the urban landscape; in the fact that it is a managed space which he describes as ‘a hinterland between the created and the wild'. Sewell brings to his exploration of present day Hampstead Heath an awareness of its past significance for poets like Keats and artists like Constable. At the same time, his work evokes the photographic diary form employed by photographers like Nan Goldin and Lee Friedlander.
