The Happy Dead I-VI

Maggi Hambling, 1990

Maggi Hambling described this series of six colourful watercolour and ink works as '...celebrating life after death. They have to do with the sunrise and dead people lying in the ground looking up at the sky, very often with water flowing below them. It's an imaginary vision of people dead who are happy'. The artist was born in Hadleigh, Suffolk, and studied at the East Anglian School of Painting, Ipswich School of Art, Camberwell School of Art, and the Slade School of Art. In 1980 she became the National Gallery's first Artist in Residence.
