Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione, c. 1648
The works subject is the ability of genius to survive the decay which overcomes so much of human achievement. Depicts a reclining youth holding a trumpet (a personification of fame), a putto, a basket with poultry and a rabbit (emblems of fruitfulness), and a palette (suggesting creative activity).
