The Facade, St Jacques, Dieppe

Walter Richard Sickert, 1899–1900

A view of the church of St Jacques as seen from the Grand'rue. The right-hand side of the facade is obscured by houses in the street. Evening sunlight, entering from the left, catches a haze in the sky, the upper part of the facade, and the top storey of the buildings to the left of the church. The rest of the picture, the lower part of the facade and the street before the church, are in shadow; and these subdued tones throw into relief the areas illumined by a golden light.
