Bill Brandt, c. 1930s

© The artist's estate

The Devil's Den is sited in Wiltshire and part of an iconic group of prehistoric objects of world wide renoun. The image is powerful with the stones linking the 'earth with the heavens'. Bill Brandt is one of the pre-eminent photographers. His black and white photographÂ’s were always created, not works of chance, and possess a strange mixture of mystery and theatre. This is the first work by Brandt to enter the collection and provides an interesting contrast with other works in the collection.
