The Crucifixion of St Peter
Pierre-Hubert Subleyras, c. 1740

This oil sketch represents Subleyras's first thoughts for a suggested altarpiece (never realised) depicting the crucifixion of St Peter, to be placed in the Vatican basilica. It is related to a number of other compositions of the subject by the artist. Of these, the present oil sketch best conveys the excitement of the initial conception.
