The Adoration of the Shepherds

Jusepe de Ribera, 1640–1645

This work shows superb handling of the mixed technique of chalk, ink wash and highlights where the red chalk is deftly used for soft skin tones, the black for the bold outlining of the figures, and the wash for the shadows. This is not a compositional study for any known painting but this is not unusual in Ribera's graphic work.
