Pugin was one of the most significant architect -designers of the first half of the 19th century, probably best known for his work in designing the interiors and furnishings for the Houses of Parliament. His influence on the Gothic Revival, on John Ruskin and William Morris, and on the next generation of architects was crucial to the development of the Arts and Crafts Movement at the turn of the last century. Pugin's approach to furniture design marks the beginning of the late 19th- and 20th-century concept of 'fitness for purpose'. The straightforward, undecorated lines of this table, developed from Tudor and Jacobean models, were influential on Arts and Crafts Movement designers.
