Art Funded by you

Still-life with Fruit

André Derain, c. 1935–1940

© ADAGP, Paris and DACS, London 2007

This bequest of eight paintings from the collection of Mrs Sarah McLeod through the Art Fund in 2001 complements and extends the Harris Museum and Art Gallery's 20th-century collection. The two paintings by Derain are post-Fauvist works reflecting his fascination with the art of the past. The delicate, lyrical brushwork of Garden at Ponnermaire en Montois reveals his interest in Watteau and Corot, while the subject matter and austere colour scheme of Still Life with Fruit are clearly influenced by 17th-century Dutch art, examples of which Derain collected.
