Statuette of Cupid

Donatello, 1425–1475

This important bronze statuette is cast solid, and is lightish in colour. Traces of an artificial green patina, which has been cleaned off, remain here and there on the surface, which bears the imprints of hammering. The Cupid may be associated with the classical figure of Eros stringing his bow as the movement of arms and torso is similar, but the sculptor has misinterpreted the position.
