St Proscodocimus baptising St Daniel
Giovanni Battista Pittoni, 1720–1730

The scene of this baptism takes place within a neoclassical setting, evident from the entablature and pilasters in the background. The ceremony takes place at the top of a flight of stairs, where Saint Prosdocimus baptises Saint Daniel in the centre of the painting. Saint Justina stands to the left of the painting and is accompanied by a dog while another female figure sits at the bottom of the stairs holding putti. In 1955, Mr Lycett Green presented his collection of 137 pictures to the City of York Art Gallery through the Art Fund. In 1957 he made a further gift to the Gallery, also through the Fund, of 6 paintings including this one.
