Silver jug

Ralph Walley, 1690–1692

This jug, with its wooden scroll handle, is engraved with 'cut out' terminals and a crest. Although often referred to as a mead jug, the wooden handle suggests it was used for hot beverages, such as hot milk or mulled drinks, maybe posset or caudle. This is an early example of a unique shaped and lipped silver jug from one of the most important of the late 17th century Chester Goldsmiths.
