Silent Companions
Adriaen Brouwer, 1600–1700

A lantern-jawed peasant sits on a low rush-bottomed chair holding a church-warden pipe to his mouth while on another chair is a second man, his back towards us and his shoulders hunched. They are before an open fire, beyond which the interior is very dark.
