Shot at Dawn numbers 14 & 22
Chloe Dewe Mathews, 2013
These two photographic works by Chloe Dewe Mathews are from ‘Shot at Dawn’, a series which records some of the sites at which British, French and Belgian soldiers were executed for cowardice or desertion during the First World War. The pictures were commissioned by the Ruskin School of Art, Oxford, and show the sites as they are today. The quiet, contemplative images now stand as a memorial to these brutal events a century after they took place.
